Secrets from Blue Zones for a Vibrant, Centenarian Life

I’m getting very close to 40. Dangerously close, like turning the big age in the fall. I’ve been thinking about how I want to enter the next decade and have decided that I need to be in the best shape mentally, physically, and spiritually before my birthday. I want to begin this next season of life healthy and happy.
I recently watched “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones” on Netflix, and I have become obsessed with it and everything pertaining to extending this beautiful life. The series explores the Blue Zones — areas in the world where people are said to live longer than average. They’re these superstar regions where folks effortlessly hit their 90s and even cross the centenarian milestone. Places like Ikaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California; Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; and Nicoya, Costa Rica have these magic spots where people live longer and better lives than most. Sounds fascinating, right? I know!
The name “Blue Zones” was derived from a survey by scientists who used a blue pen on a map to mark the villages with a long-lived population.
The series had me curious, wanting to soak up everything there is on Blue Zones and the secrets for longevity.
Here’s what I learned:
Lesson 1: Veggies Are Your Friends (Especially the Funky Ones)
These guys in Blue Zones are all about munching on plant-based goodness. And no, they’re not just settling for a boring ol’ salad. They’re diving into a world of veggies — from seaweed to dandelion greens to kale.
Next time you’re in the produce aisle, why not pick up something you’ve never tried? Who knows, your body might thank you with extra years.
Lesson 2: Get Moving, Keep Grooving
We all know the benefits of staying active, but it’s not just about flexing those muscles; it’s about giving your brain a good workout too. These Blue Zone residents keep themselves sharp by staying active — gardening, walking, and dancing.
Lesson 3: Family Love and the Magic of Grandma’s Cooking
Family is gold in these Blue Zones. Let’s be real: one of the many perks of having a close-knit family is the amazing food they cook. If you’re eyeing that 100-year mark, it might be time to hit up Grandma for her secret recipes. Her culinary magic might be the elixir you’ve been searching for.
Lesson 4: Chill, Take a Breather
Stress isn’t a friend of longevity. That’s why Blue Zone dwellers take relaxation seriously — think meditation, nature time, and those glorious siestas. Put on your favorite calming tunes, light a fragrant candle, and indulge in a good ol’ nap — your stress levels will plummet.
So what did we learn?
Blue Zone folks might not hold all the secrets to living forever, but they do know how to enjoy life! So, let’s take a leaf out of their book: snack on some kale, get down with our fam, and permit ourselves to rest— we’re hitting the 100 mark. Well, I’m working toward 40 but 100 after that!
