A Danish Lesson On Being Presentmedium.com
Including hygge as part of your New Year’s intentions is one of the best things you can do. The Danish people are among the happiest people on earth because they practice hygge. You can do the same and achieve so much more this year.
To prepare you for this journey, I’ve put together a list of great Hygge ideas. They’ll set you on the path to starting the year right and motivate you to live blissfully. So here are 11 Hygge new year’s intentions that will help you make the best of 2023.
1. Cultivate More Meaningful Connections
This is the year that we move beyond mandatory phone call check-ins and detached conversations. Find more meaningful ways to connect with your loved ones this year. I also love that this intention can be interpreted differently depending on who you are.
For some people, it could be putting together a book club with friends. While for others, it could be taking turns to host game night at your home. Remember that the goal is to change how you interact with the people you meet this year.

2. Learn Something New
Is there something you’ve been meaning to learn and keep putting off? 2023 is your year to become an expert. You can do this if you make up your mind and set things in place.
For example, listen to audiobooks about the topic and take an in-person class. Or learn with YouTube on your commute and find a mentor. Be determined to make it work, and you’ll end the year with that new skill.
3. Reach Out
Is there someone who meant so much to you in the past with whom you are no longer in touch? I don’t mean your ex or a friend you had a falling out with. I’m referring to those important relationships that drift apart sometimes due to distance.
How about taking time out to reconnect with them this year? You can send an email, shoot them a text or GASP — give them a phone call. You never know; your reaching out could be just what you both needed.
4. Start A Hygge Morning Ritual
Starting your day right is important, and a Hygge morning ritual is a great way to position yourself. So, make a commitment to wake up early, and spend time meditating, reading, or praying. Trust me, starting your day with a routine that grounds you, will positively impact your entire day. could also decide to listen to beautiful music; it’ll affect how your remaining hours turn out.

5. Learn A New Craft
This is different from the learning mentioned earlier. This time, you’ll be taking a more thoughtful approach and learning a craft to use in your Hygge downtime. It’s a beautiful way never to lose your sense of wonder while doing something useful.
Some ideas to work with include crocheting, baking, woodwork, candle making, painting, or knitting. You can also try out rock painting or calligraphy. Learning a craft like this helps you bring back that cozy feeling of creating with your own hands.

6. Reduce the Violence You See on TV
This is not to say that you should be ignorant, but I do think we should limit how much violence we see. Life is hard enough without surrounding yourself with drama every hour of the day. Your outlook on life will also be more positive if you limit how much negativity you process. Replace negative programming with positive messaging wherever you can.

7. More Candlelight Dinners
There’s an essence of peace and magic that candlelit dinners bring into a home. It’s a memory maker. So, start this year by changing at least one dinner a month to a candlelight dinner. You’ll see positives sooner than you think. How romantic!
8. Declutter Every Day
When most people think of decluttering, they think of a long day of work organizing and cleaning. There’s another approach that might serve you better. How about making a vow to give at least one thing away per week this year?
If you try to do it all at once, you could get easily overwhelmed and decide to give up. However, getting rid of one thing per week is quicker and easier. Plus, if you start now, at the end of the year, you’d have gotten rid of more than 52 things.
9. Make One Day in A Month Yours
It is really easy to forget yourself in the fast-paced world that we live in today. However, one year of self-love can change your outlook on life so much. So how about taking one day out of each month to care for yourself and do only things you like?
If you’re a parent, this might mean hiring a babysitter or leaning on your community a bit more, but the results will be worth it. Find time for yourself this year and do something that you love. It could be visiting another town or as simple as attending a concert.

Sunrises and sunsets are some of the most beautiful natural shows. Best part? — They’re free! We should take more time to watch them unfold. So, make it a tradition to experience more sunrise and sunsets this year.
11. Do Something for Others Weekly
If we’re honest, we’ll all admit that the world could do with a bit more kindness. Be the channel this year and start a ripple effect by doing an act of kindness each week. You’ll be surprised to find that your thoughtfulness would also benefit you.
